Is it a bit late in the day to start to try to use the Shakehands Grip. I have been playing league matches for a number of years and don't hold the bat in any particular way. I thought maybe the Shakehands grip would possibly help me play better shots with the aim of winning more matches.

I would give it a try. Spend a couple of months doing it and then if you feel that it isn't working it will be easy enough to switch back.
