Do I have to throw the ball toward myself to do the zhang jike pendulum serve

Hi Pakorn,
In theory you should throw the ball almost vertically. However in practice you can throw it a little in towards you to make the serve more effective.

It may sound like a bad idea but the no spin serve can be effective when put together with a range of spin serves. In fact, this is a must have in your arsenal of serves.
