Serving
I need some tips for a basic no spin serve. I'm just learning it and it always seems to have topspin.
Hi Owen,
The ball will roll forward when it contacts your side of the table because of the friction with the ball and the surface.
You can put a slight amount of backspin on the ball if you want it to have 'no spin' when it reaches your opponent.

Thank you so much Alois!

Owen, I've read one tip - contact the ball close to the handle of your blade. This means when you hit the ball, that part of your blade has moved through a smaller arc and so you will impart less spin. The real trick is to do this with the same action as a spinny serve!

Contacting the ball closer to the handle may also take some of the speed off the ball and hence make the serve somewhat shorter so you'll need to adjust racket speed to get the delivery you want.

In my case, creating a completely blank serve ( I assume we are not talking about top speed serve) was (for me) succesful by starting like backspin serve but just soft hitting the ball instead of brushing in the last moment.

D K exactly, and it is very satisfying when someone lifts and it pops up nicely to hit. Another variant I try is to start like a tomahawk serve but turn my bat at the last moment so I contact the ball face on. This acts like a fast push - probably slight bit of back spin, but I try to get it into the x point. Surprising how many people get caught out by that.

Yea.
I dont use that serve too much though as I hate when the opponent pops an empty ball and it lands on the table due to smash being enormously difficult for me
