Receiving
Hi guys,
Im having trouble reading topspin and backspin from the tomahawk serve, Is there a way i could see what spin my opponent is putting on it, like any things i should look out for when receiving the serve?.
Thanks!
Hi Keiran,
The tomahawk is one of the more difficult serve to tell because the change in the serve is subtle. The main thing to watch for is the angle of their bat on contact. If it is slightly under the ball then it will be backspin, if it is slightly on top then it will be topspin. As I said the difference is very subtle, just a matter of a few degrees on their bat.
the other thing to watch for is where on their swing they contact the ball. If it is on the upward part of the swing then it is topspin and if it is on the downward part of the swing then it is backspin.
The Tomahawk serve is getting more popular. How can you deal with a good Tomahawk serve? What returns should you be looking to make?

Thanks a lot Alois, I really appreciate the help!
Also would learning the serve potentially help me understand the serve more, learning it maybe to a basic level, not match play level.

Learning the serve would definitely help you to understand it. You will get a feel for what I am talking about and also see the effect of the ball. When you are learning the serve, watch each serve you do and see what path the ball takes. This will help you to understand the different spins you are getting.
