how should the angle of the bat be when countering a top-spin ball with a back-spin ball?

usually when the ball gets a bit high in the air with top-spin the opposite player hits the ball. which is rather challenging to defend. what is the best way to defend?

thank you in advance

Hi Jerry,

Firstly think about working on keeping your defence lower.  This will reduce the number of difficult balls that you need to defend.

Whenever you have a problem such as this always think back a step first.  How can you stop this from happening.

For a heavily hit topspin you need to have a more vertical defensive stroke.  You don't need as much forward momentum because of the speed of the topspin.

Take a look at our Lesson on the Forehand Chop and the Backhand Chop.  These will also help you.

#34 - Chopping, a last defence

Unless you are a defender you won't be practicing chopping regularly. However the chop is a great way to stay in the point if you are out of position and is also a difficult variation for your opponent to deal with.
