Hi Alois and Jeff,

this is one of the most intriguing thoughts that usually occur to me when it comes to terms in table tennis. What is the difference between a normal topspin and a loop? Is a loop also a topspin? How will you know if you are doing a normal topspin and a loop? It's really mind-boggling.

Hi Cloud,

They are just different terms for a topspin.  The loop is usually referred to as a slower higher topspin.  There is no defining line between the two.  I usually just refer to it as a topspin.

Take a look at our recent reply to an Ask the Coach question on Attacking Short Balls.  This will help you.

should you snap your forearm while looping and is it more of a forward action or does it finish the same as the FH Topsin

Take a look at the lesson we showed earlier.  If the ball is in front of you you don't need to snap through.  If you are in good position then you would play a forehand topspin like normal.
