Hi Alois, there's a club that is hosting a Christmas event where all the old rules apply; 5 serves, 38mm balls, 21 points. I'm probably giving it a try because why not. Are there any tactical differences between current rules and old rules?
Hi Jasper,
That sounds like a fun and nostalgic event. I think Jeff would like to play that one.
Playing with the old rules certainly brings a different dynamic to the game compared to the current 11-point system and other updated rules. Here are a few tactical differences you might want to consider:
1. Longer games: With games going up to 21 points, matches tend to last longer. You have more time to study your opponent and adapt your strategies throughout the game.
2. Serving strategy: Having 5 serves each can allow for more momentum within a game. If you have a strong serve, you can potentially dominate for longer stretches, putting more pressure on your opponent to break your serve. Conversely, if you're receiving, breaking your opponent's serve becomes crucial.
3. Psychological aspects: The longer format can also impact the psychological game, with more opportunities for comebacks or shifts in momentum. Managing your mental state and staying resilient throughout the longer game will be key.
4. Use of 38mm balls: The older 38mm balls are slightly smaller and faster than the current 40mm ones, leading to shorter rallies and perhaps a more spin-focused game.
t’s great to hear you’re giving this a go! Enjoy the experience, and use it as an opportunity to explore different strategies and perhaps even refine some aspects of your regular game. Good luck, Jasper! Let us know how you get on and what you think of the "old days"...
