Training partner as opponent in a match

Training

Hi Alois/Jeff,

What if my training partner appears as an opponent in a vital (final of a tournament) match?

He knows about my strengths and weakness very well and I also know about him.

Is it better to hide some strokes/shots during training and use them as surprises in the match?

I see videos in which international players also practice with the players who can be their opponent.

Any comments on training partner as opponent?

Regards

Hi Balaji,

I think we need to think broader.  If you are always hiding things from your training partner, you will not progress as quickly as you should.

Train hard and use what you have.  When they improve against this it will force you to also improve to beat them.

Taking Risks

It's important that you assess your opponent's skill level and your own skill level. Using this information you can then decide how much risk you need to put into your game. If your opponent is a lot more consistent than you, you may need to go for a bit more on each of your shots to try and force an error.
