Underspin Trouble with Short Pimples

Last night I got my butt kicked all because of not handeling underspin. I'm playing short pips on both sides and I'm a shakehands player. I dont like pushing but i did last night and will be working on that today. I was able to counter the other day but I need to know the angle for my backhand play. I don't play slow and I attack a lot but players like to get in my head and use different ways to slow me down. What's the stroke for dealing with underspin with my short pips?

Hi Marc,

Take a look at our lesson on theĀ Effects of Rubbers. This demonstrates the effect a backspin ball has against short pimples. You can either push the ball back or you can attempt to topspin the ball.

With the push it is similar to using normal rubber but as the spin doesn't affect the short pimples as much, you don't need to angle you bat as much.

If you want to topspin the ball you still need to brush the ball with the short pimples to counter the backspin but again the backspin will not affect the short pimples as much as it does the normal rubber.

Banana Flick

The banana flick has become one of the most important returns in table tennis. It allows you to attack almost any short ball and places your opponent under immediate pressure. Still it is a difficult stroke that takes a lot of practice to master.
