How to put sidespin on a short push and will it be tricky to do that?

Hi Ashley,

To put a bit of sidespin on the short push you need to just brush across the line of the ball a little.  So rather than getting the bat to go straight forward, you need to come across to generate the sidespin.  This will lessen your margin of error but it can be an awkward ball to receive if you get it right.

I've heard some players add sidespin to their returns (by brushing the side of the ball) in order to partially neutralize (be less sensitive to) the spin that is on the serve and decrease return errors.  Could PingSkills comment on this statement?

Good video, as you said on the video, it is better to hit the ball with a little of backspin :D

Hi Victor,

Yes you can do this but it can be risky.  It is best to just provide the bat at the right angle to get the ball back with the greatest consistency.

Hi Alois,

But what about making a long push with sidespin? Do you think that it is a helpful stroke?

Hi Ilia,

It can be useful when used as a surprise.  When you push with sidespin you lose some backspin so it will give your opponent a little ability to lift the ball.  If your opponent doesn't like sidespin, then it can be effective.

Alois,

I have a question about pushing wide to (or even outside of) the corners. I find that with the "straight" push it is quite difficult, but sidespin helps to move the ball to the side more. So should I learn how to make an ordinary long push to the wide angle or keep using sidespin push?

Hi Ilia,

You can certainly develop both.

After all push is a defensive stroke. So why to take a risk...Developing straight push with different spin / target area will probably help.. smile

I find sidespin pushes very useful against players who push nice and low but don't attack much. They will often pop the ball high enough for a kill
