Rotation on forehand topspin against backspin

Strokes

Hi pingskills,

I have a problem with the waist rotation when it's comes to lifting a backspin. I can't rotate forwards. It just seems weird.

It's normal to rotate forwards on the forehand topspin against block or topspin because you are coming forwards and over the ball but the backspin just feels very weird. You are starting low and finishing high with a lifting stroke, your waist never seems to rotate forwards but upwards and the stroke then becomes weak. How to solve this problem.

Hi Eugene,

It may take a little while to get the coordination right.

You rotate your waist while your arm is swinging up. If you focus on your left arm while you are playing your stroke you may be able to get a better feeling for the rotation.  Think about the left hand drawing a circle in the air around your body.  This will get the rotation happening.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
