Gooday jeff.

i wanted to ask how to discover a player's weak point when playing for the first time with the player, and not having any prior information about that player.  Having in mind that you have only a best of 5 or best of 7 game to play with him or her.

Hi Chris,

Try to play to different areas, forehand, backhand and middle with both an attacking shot and a push and see what they cope with.

You can go through the things we look at in the Vault.

Also see if you can watch them play a previous match in the day.  You can also use the warm up time to gain some of this information.  Try playing your topspin to the different places and see what they can cope with.

Tactics Against A Defensive Chopper

A chopper likes to get back from the table and get into a nice rhythm. If you keep the defender close to the table in the early part of the rally, it's hard for them to transition back into their chopping position. So keep the ball short on your serve and try and catch them unprepared. Watch the video to find out more great tactics to use against a defensive chopper.
