The main reason most people choose inverted rubber over pimpled rubber is that with a pimple rubber you cannot generate much spin at all. The inverted rubbers are very tacky and hence are capable of gripping the ball and generating a lot of revolutions per second when you strike the ball with a fast brushing motion. The invention of inverted rubbers revolutionized the game of table tennis and now it really is a game of spin. It's the extreme topspin that allows the top players to hit the ball so hard and causes it to dip down and still hit the table.
