Strokes
Hi Alois/Jeff,
I was just on a training camp and learned to play early, mid and late forehand topspins against under- and topspin balls. I did quite well there but I guess I still need more training for perfection. Apart from that I forgot to ask when to play which kind of topspin. Can you clarify this for me?
Thanks,
Michael
Hi Michael,
You can utilise each of these different timings as a variation. In general if you are in a good position, it is good to play the ball early as you will give your opponent less time. However, some players like the ball coming fast to them so then it is good to play the ball al little later and make them wait for the ball.
The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:
If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
