Strokes
Hi Alois.
My Coach says when you do the backhand counterhit you have to hold your wrist tight. And don't use it at all.
I recently saw a video of Ma Long teaching the backhand counterhit. He said the backhand stroke mainly relies on arm and wrist. Mainly the wrist. And he uses wrist a lot. When I try to use my wrist I lose accuracy. Help Me I'm learning this stroke. Use my wrist or not?
Hi Ali,
When you are starting to learn the stroke it is best to not use the wrist. This will give you better control of the ball. As you get better then it is time to start to introduce the wrist into the stroke. If you use your wrist too much early it will lead to lots of errors and frustration.
The banana flick has become one of the most important returns in table tennis. It allows you to attack almost any short ball and places your opponent under immediate pressure. Still it is a difficult stroke that takes a lot of practice to master.

I'm a shakehander and I feel the same as you discribe. I get the feeling that the arm action becomes like a whip
But that said, my BH is not exactly my strongest part of the game so I could be wrong here... :|
Cheers!

How about keeping the arm relaxed and letting the stroke flow naturally? I feel this is the best way since each individual creates his own unique style and up to a certain extent his own stroke as well. If you focus too much on a particular part i.e. wrist, forearm or shoulder your stroke will suffer and will be not be natural.
That is the reason, it is mentioned lots of times to focus on the start and finish position of any stroke let the rest take care of itself. Idea is to keep body position relaxed and have a free flowing stroke.
