Strokes
Dear Pingskills,
My openings/ loops on backspin are spinny but not so fast. How can I improve this?
Thx in advance.
Hi Peter,
The first thing is to generate a good amount of spin which it sounds like you are doing. To get the ball faster you can do two things. Firstly you can increase the speed of your swing to get the ball moving faster. Secondly you can flatten out the contact slightly to get the ball moving faster. You will compromise on the amount of spin you are getting but you will add speed. Then work out a good ration of spin to speed that you are looking for for consistency or a faster shot.
In this video, we dive into the forehand push, a crucial defensive stroke in table tennis that allows you to control rallies with effective backspin. We break down the three key concepts—start position, feet position, and finish position—to help you execute the stroke with precision. You'll also learn how to adjust your bat angle to generate varying degrees of backspin, depending on the spin your opponent imparts on the ball. Finally, we'll guide you through practical drills to enhance your proficiency and consistency with the forehand push, ensuring you're well-prepared for your next match. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your technique, this tutorial will provide you with the tools to master the forehand push.

Hi Alois,
The ball hits the ceiling fast when I make a timing mistake so don'nt now if I can swing faster. I shall try to flatten out the contact. Till how many degrees can I hold my bat if the amount of backspin is very high?
My teammates teel me often that I lean too much bachwards while playing the forehand stroke. It's hard to correct it.
Hi Peter,
With practice you can get the swing faster and timing right.
Focus on getting the weight on the front half of your feet. This will help you to lean forward. You need too concentrate on this during training as well.
It is difficult to give you a definite bat angle because it will depend on the amount of spin on the ball and the speed of your swing. That is why practice and experimentation are required.
