Alois,

I find myself picking the ball up late even though I watch it closely.

I took a clinic given by Sean O'Neill he told me to watch your opponent's racket angle to help you determine when the direction of the shot.

I followed Jeff's link and read the article, good stuff but a lot to digest.

Can you expand on the idea of watching your opponents racket angle for clues or can you provide some more ideas that we can work on in training?

Anything you can share on anticipation would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

-DA

Hi Darrell,

I think watching the ball is the best way to go.  Physically watching the other players bat is difficult.  You will see that peripherally anyway.  I think it depends on how well you are watching the ball.  This can take a while to really get right and it can always get better.

I used to have the same problem . On some days I used to pick up the ball easily and on others not so well despite the fact that I watched the ball closely all the time. Then I figured out that sometimes  I was watching the ball so closely that I couldn't see anything but the ball (sort of like using binoculars to track a moving airplane, it doesn't show you how the airplane is moving just shows where exactly it is at the moment  ).I was zooming in too much on the ball. Try watching the ball as if you are taking the ball's picture along with it's background then you will be able to anticipate better as you will be provided with more information. You will be able to see your opponent's strokes and movement without even concentrating on his racket or body as this will be visible in the background as you watch the ball. I hope this helps . Also, can you give me the link to Jeff's article that you mentioned?
