Attacking backspins

Strokes

Hi Jeff & Alois,

Can’t I attack a heavy backspin with a flat shot without topspining it? Once I hit a backspin flat batted and it placed on the table more like a smash. Once I try it again it too worked. But it doesn`t work on loose backspins. Can’t I hit that ball like that?

Hi Tharindu,

It is possible to do but there is a very low margin for error.  You would do better to try and topspin them so that the stroke is more consistent.  The flat ball will often go into the net or off the end because there is no dip on the flight of the ball.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
