Hi Serch,

With your backhand it is often a matter of getting the stroke right.  Make sure that you are doing the stroke correctly.  If you can get a video of your stroke and see what it looks like.  You may be able to find something that you will be able to improve.

For returning a smash, it is sometimes a matter of getting the touch to get the ball back onto the table.  See if you can soften your hands when you are making the return.  This will allow you more feel for returning.  If you are back from the table, try putting the ball a bit higher in the air to give yourself a bit more time to be ready for the next smash. Think of the lob as being a big topspin.  Take a look at the lesson on the Lob.

When someone makes a strong topspin to my backhand (not a smash) i usually try to return it with a block to the back line. If you do it correctly and with nice speed it can surprise your opponent a lot giving you an easier next ball or even making him fail.

 Hope it helps too ;)
