Backhand Topspin return flying left and upwards

Service Return

Hi PingSkills,

I am finding difficulty in backhand topspin return out of my ten returns only two are going across onto the table, the rest are flying the left and upwards (I play right hand).

So, I want to know where am I going wrong in those eight shots. Is it because of loose grip or bat angle or anything else.

Regards,

Dep

Hi Dep,

Without seeing what is actually happening it is difficult to tell exactly.  At a guess you may be hitting the ball too late if the ball is often going to the left.

One of the keys to a good backhand topspin is to get the ball in the right hitting zone before you play your shot. If the ball is going too high you may not be getting over the ball enough.  You can angle you racket more forward.

Hi Alois,

Thank You very much , you got it right, I have followed what you have said, and also bending while return helped me a lot.

I am big fan of your video on 'Back hand side spin flick'  and my backhand topspin is begining and ending with side spin flick because I am so much into that shot like for long and fast serves also I am getting into the side spin flick shot.

This is because I am not getting enough time for a proper Backhand topspin, I am succeding in straight serves with normal pace but for side spin serves I am ending up in lifing the ball high into oppenents side which most of times falls outside table.

I have seen the video on ' How to return a long side spin serve ' I am not comfortable in that return pattern, So for side spin should I go for backhand chop low over net which has a good amount of backspin??

No, you shouldnt, u shall train ur topspin return, because a sidespin serve is more like a topspin serve than backspin serve. and what i recommend is to flick the ball on short sidespins, and on long ones, u should train ur topspin return. Its really hard to keep it short on sidespin serves. and u have to place it in the right corner. ( not right, like right left. but right like correct ) Pendelum serves, try to make the ball going away from ur opponents body. and the reverse pendelum, try getting it in ur opponents body. most of the time. But as a change u can do the opposite. I think Alois, can teach u a bit more.

Hi Dep,

I would persevere with the backhand topspin against the long serve.  It is a matter of practice.  If you always chop it will allow your opponent the first attack every time.

Thank you so much Alois and Eirik, I'll go ahead with my BH topspin for side spin serves and long serves.
