Strokes and Technique
Whenever I perform a backhand topspin, the first usually makes it in, however the following shots tend to go astray and usually out.
In an attempt to fix this, I've attempted to close the racket angle a bit more but this results in me either hitting the edge of the bat where the ball goes flying or just into the net. (my opponent generally returns with top spin)
If I hit it too lightly he instantly returns it with a smash
What should I do?
Hi David,
Try to keep the angle a little more open but come forward and brush the ball on contact. The topspin is important to get the ball to dip onto the table. If you are getting enough topspin then you can hit the ball faster.

Does closing the racket angle causes more spin or open angle causes more spin.??

Closing the angle will cause more spin but if the ball already has spin on it you can hit it flatter.
The advantage of opening the angle is you will get more consistent contact and less top edges.

What my coach told me when my backhand topspin was awful is to take your space and stand like 1 or 1.5 meters away from the table and get the feeling of the stoke and your topspins wont fly off the table so often. once you have a good controll try it closer to the table.
