Hello, I have been trying to get some Backspin into my pendulum but every time it looks like it has no backspin.

Also is this suppose to happen? : In my Pendulum Serve the ball curves then moves in a straight line of the angle it curved sometimes it even looks like its top spinning in a straight line( like jumping where when you top spin the ball "Jumps" of the table) Is that considered heavy side spin?

Help me Coach Im so confused

Hi Raymond,

As long as you have decent rubbers that are capable of generating spin, then you need 2 basic ingredients to generate spin.

  1.  Have a fast contact
  2. Have a fine brushing contact
If you get these 2 things right you will generate lots of spin. The type of spin is determined by where you hit the ball. If you want backspin then try hitting the underside of the ball. For a heavy backspin serve you can get your bat to be completely horizontal and hit the bottom of the ball. A good trick to see if you are getting backspin is move away from the table and try and hit the ball and get it to spin back to you. The only way you can get the ball to spin back to you is by getting a lot of backspin. Once you can consistently get the ball coming back to you then head over to the table and try and generate the same type of contact. Then you will know you are getting backspin on your serve.

The serve you describe above does sound like a sidespin serve with a bit of topspin. This can be a very effective serve and to execute this with the pendulum serve, you need to brush upwards on the back of the ball.

So please try out the trick of getting the ball spinning back to you away from the table and let me know if it helps you out.
