Hi Alois, I've recently been playing better players then me, and I've found myself blocking more and more. Also I've just realized that when people loop hard to my wide forehand I still make the movement to block with my backhand, it's just a reaction I guess. Is it okay? Most players tell me to go to the forehand so I'm not sure.
Hi Mike,
Often when we feel more comfortable with one stroke or side over the other we tend to overuse it.
Use the middle line as a guide and only let yourself use the backhand block when the ball is in your backhand half and then use your forehand block in the forehand half of the table.
If you use your backhand block when the ball i in your forehand half you are exposing the backhand side of your table.
Practice with your partned tospinning the ballon one to the forehand then one to the backhand. Practice switching form forehand to backhand block.
In our upcoming DVD Training Secrets Revealed we will cover other training drills that you can use to practice to overcome problems like this.
Most drills involve one person performing the exercise and the other placing the ball as required by the exercise. We call this person placing the ball the controller. When you are acting as the controller it is a great opportunity to practice your blocking and concentration. As blocking is an important part of the game you should be 100% focused at this time. You also owe it to your training partner to be blocking effectively so they get the most from their exercise.
