Celebrating points

Dear Alois and Jeff,

What is with the celebration after winning points? To me, it doesn't seem necessary. It puts me off watching the game. I tried to watch the recent European Championships, but it was just so frustrating to see these grown adults acting like children!! I understand table tennis can be an extremely tense sport, and that release of emotion is needed, but surely there is a more subtle way of doing it than shouting at the top of their voice!? It doesn't happen in squash or tennis, so why table tennis?

Hi Simon,

It is just one of the characteristics of some players.  I think it adds to the atmosphere when watching a match. I understand it isn't for everyone though.

Did you enjoy the level of play?  I haven't seen a lot of it as yet but it sounds like Boll was dominant again.

It can do that as well.  I think normally it is for their own confidence though.

I agree 100%, Simon. The overly aggressive shouting after winning a point puts me off watching a match as well. Shouting after winning a match, ok, or a really long rally but not after every single point? It's a modern development we could do without, I think. Xu Xin doesn't seem to do it as much as some of his compatriots, which makes a refreshing change.

regards,

Martin
