Choosing the types of serves to progress your game

Serving

I know you need to vary your serves, but what ones are most optimal to use?

I see some people using a chop as a serve since if can make backspin/ sidespin (usually they try making backspin to get it to come back to them over the net). Is this good or too risky?

Hi Adam,

Great question and you're right, variation is key. But within that, there are certain serves that tend to be more effective across all levels.

Firstly, take a look at our section on Types of Table Tennis Serves.  Start at the top and work your way down the site.  These types of serves will allow you to find something that suits your game.

The most optimal serves are the ones that give you control over the rally from the very start, usually short, spinny serves that make it hard for your opponent to attack. Here are a few I’d recommend building your game around:

  1. Short sidespin backspin serve – This one keeps your opponent guessing. If they misread the spin, they pop the ball up or into the net. It also sets up your third ball nicely.

  2. Short sidespin topspin/no-spin variation – Especially useful once your opponent starts expecting backspin. With a similar action, you can surprise them and force weak returns.

  3. Long fast serve to the elbow or backhand corner – Used occasionally, this keeps your opponent honest. If they’re crowding the table or leaning in for a short ball, a fast, well-placed serve can catch them completely off guard.

The key is not just having a variety of serves, but also disguising them well. You don’t need ten different serves—you need two or three good ones that you can vary in spin, placement and speed.

Start with those basics, and then watch your opponents closely, what they struggle with, what they return easily and build from there.
