Coaching a left handed player

Strokes

For the first time I am coaching a left handed player. I find that he shows awkwardness when playing a forehand stroke. As a right handed player myself, I find difficulty demonstrating the correct techniques. Any tips on how to handle this.

Hi Ashwin,

One idea that one of our readers came up with is to get them to watch you in a mirror.

You could also try just taking his bat and guiding him through the stroke without the ball.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.

As a left handed player, I found Alois' lessons instrumental when I was beginning to learn the game about a year back. I thought I was extremely lucky. Over the time, as I have progressed, it has become less important whether the person whom I am watching is left handed or right.
