Hi Alois,

I have been playing singles and doubles in table tennis.  Is there any minor adjustments does one need to make while playing singles and doubles in terms of footwork or shot selection etc.  I am a beginner in table tennis.  Whether I can improve my game by playing both singles and doubles or just concentrating on one alone.

From your experience, kindly tell me whether playing singles is difficult or doubles and also whether a good singles player can also be a good doubles player.

Regards,
Ram

Hi Ram,

Singles players are usually good doublles players.  The skills are very transferrable.

I wouldn't spend too much time training doubles, just spend more time on the table with your singles skills.

Perhaps before a tournament, you and your partner can work on some doubles together just to get an understanding of what each other is doing.

Beating Defenders

Against defenders you've generally got a bit more time to make your attack and so you can be more selective on which ball to target. Think about finding your opponent's weaker side and whether they prefer a faster ball coming towards them or a slower ball. Try different spins, speed and placement!
