Hi Jayalakshmi,

You should use the same tactics I would subscribe for any player.  I would start with a backspin ball to the long pimples.  This will give you back a topspin type ball that you will be able to attack with your forehand.

If you both hit shots with the long pimples, there will be very little spin on the ball. This is also a ball that you can then attack.

If they attack with their forehand then you are playing a ball like you would against any other player.

It is often a matter of getting used to the different spins that are coming and adjusting to them.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
