Training

What is the best and most disciplined way to train? How much time do you recommend to train daily. I mean, what should I focus on when training....forehand counterhit, backhand counterhit, serving, spin, etc? I love table tennis but I dont have someone to play with constantly so what is the most appropiate way to practice table tennis versus yourself...

Hi Manuel,

The key to training is to practice what is relevant to your game. At PingSkills we see too many players training for the sake of training and forgetting about the relevance to trying to improve their table tennis game.

As a guide train in sessions of about 2 hours with a break in the middle to refresh your body and your mind.

Follow a simple training plan as outlined in our Blog Structuring Your Training Session . Without seeing your game I can not comment on what you need to practice. Think about what you need to improve to win more point and then put that back into your training session.

If you would like help with this go to the Analysis section of our website.

With regard to practicing by yourself there is no easy way. You can get the old "Playback' tables and hit up against that but it is never the same as hitting with someone else. Really try to find a local club or someone else in your area that you can play with.

Lobbing Tactics

If you get pushed back from the table don't just give up the point. Try and and get back into the rally. By lobbing the ball high and deep you give yourself time to get into position. If you can then get some topspin on the ball to force the smasher further away from the table then you are likely to get a weaker smash and then you can take your chance and try to counter attack!
