Hi,

I learnt that it is "ideal" to actually brush the full surface of the bat on the ball to get a spinny topspin. However, this is not possible in reality. What are the different effects then in brushing the ball at

1) top of the bat

2) middle of the bat

3) bottom of the bat?

Hi JinMeng,

To get the most spin you need to contact it near the top of the bat because then it will stay on the rubber for longer.  If you brush it near the bottom it will soon be off the surface.

Thank you. Are there cases where players use the lower part of the bat to actually creata an effect which may deceive the opponent with the amount of topspin?

They certainly do.  It is a very difficult skill to master though.

Thank you. What are the various effects of me brushing the ball at the bottom of the bat and centre then? Thank you.

The bottom will get less spin, the middle you will get better control.  This is a good point to start with for anything.  As you get more comfortable you can experiment with other places on the bat.

Thank you. Can I just ask, if an opponents has a forehand drive to my backhand which bounces on let say the while line, it is possible to topspin back or the only way is a block if I stand close to the table?

You can topspin as long as you have good balance for the stroke.
