hello sir, just like to know where to draw the line between keeping the ball on table and a good return or winner, after reading one of lines written on this amazing web site PINGSKILLS.COM.
which says that consistency to be able to put the ball on table as many times as possible.
I feel that players make mistakes (while tryin to keep the return short, long, tight and tryin to attack so that the apponent is nt able to hit a winner OR THE player CAN GET THE UPPER HAND BY ATTACKING first) which will eventually leed to a point loss. And if players jst try to keep the ball on table the return will be loose. And point will be lost.Though i agree with u that if u can jst keep the ball on table with good returns then nothing better then that.

The lesson of the Most Important Skill is meant for beginners to be able to play the game of Table Tennis.  However without this skill you will always find it difficult to improve no matter what level you are.

So, we are not necessarily talking about match tactics but more about learning the basic skills of the game.  Of course if you are an attacking player, in a match you need to maintain the advantage by making the first attacking stroke.
