Covering Balls Wide to my Backhand

Footwork

Hey Alois & Jeff,

I've been having trouble with a loop that comes very wide to my backhand and then I usually play a last resort stroke like a block... Most of the time I don't have the time to move my body into position and play a backhand loop, so how can I attack it back when I have to extend my arm? Also I was thinking maybe I could try a side spin backhand like Percy Lu did on his Great around the net shot. So what would be the most effective stroke on that wide of a backhand?

Thanks a bunch guys! P.S. still loving my Pingskills touch ;)

Hi Collin,

You really only want to try a backhand shot like Percy's when you are caught out of position. If someone is looping at you then using a block is a good option.

Try to use your footwork to get into position. Although you say you can't get into position, you'll find that as you get better at watching the ball really closely, you'll pick up little cues from your opponent and be able to react faster and get into position. The key here is to track the ball really, really closely.

P.S. Glad to hear you're liking the PingSkills Touch!

Backhand Block From Wide

The backhand block is an effective stroke. If you are forced out wide can you still play this stroke effectively?
