Deception

Strokes and Technique

Hi, Pingskills

I have improved my game with LP a little bit, it goes well. I return serves quite good, the way you explained to me, to go flat on back and side spin ball. But, main thing is, although the ball wobbles a little bit, my opponents still can topspin the ball. So, is there a way to stop them from doing that. And one more thing, what is deception, and how to produce those random deceptive spins? I think it would also contribute to my game.

Hi Sasha,

You will be able to start to hit through the return even faster to make it more difficult for your opponent to topspin.  Also placing the ball well will make it more difficult.

Deception is something that you may be able to do with more practice.  You can slightly alter the swing but still have the same contact on the ball.  This is something that you can experiment with.

Can you be more specific about it, do you have some video example on YouTube, how to alter my swing, in what way, with keeping the same contact? And, one more thing, if my opponent sends me a backspin ball, can I return it with LP by moving my blade to the side, from left to right and vise verso? I have noticed that when I try to push that ball like with inverted rubber, the ball goes into the net. I ask this, because many players don't attack me, they defend themselves with backspin, waiting for my error, and it is hard for me to improve my game away from the table. And if I hit that backspin right through, is it similar to backhand counter hit, or is there some difference. Thank you

A simple thing you can try is to add a different movement on your follow through.  So instead of a straight follow through on your swing, deviate to swing.  Give this a try and see how it works.
