Hi Alois

Today I was distracted with the band which was hanging loose from the opponents blade.  It is the band which surrounds the blade.

It seemed to flap about as he was serving or playing shots till I advised him that it was affecting my concentration . Just wanted to check if a player could raise an alarm with the umpire for these type of distractions and would anything else like this be counted as a distraction.

Thanks

Regards

Grenville

Hi Grenville,

You were right to ask him to fix the racket.  It would be counted as a distraction.

Hi Alois

Thanks ,  is there anything else I should be aware of as a table tennis player that could be counted as distractions , like for example movement behind the player or bright apparel etc

What about players who stamp their feet when they hit the ball?

Hi Grenville,

Movement behind the table is probably not something you can do enough of.

Hi Gordon,

A player stamping their foot isn't considered a distraction in itself but if they are doing it deliberately it may be.

I stomp when I serve too but thats just to cover the sound of the contact so he cant hear how I hit the ball.

Hi

The one thing I also find distracting is players who scream excessively when they win a point , but if that's allowed in table tennis looks like I would have to train myself to ignore that.

yes but that the point of the screaming. they are trying to distract/taunt you so he gets more points.

first i thought it was about 'celebrating' a point, but if you look at the top players they are looking in the eyes of the opponent when they scream. they are like 'come at me'

I personally dont do it because I think its just embarrising. I only say 'Yaah' when I won a very nice rally but thats just it.

I agree , especially when we start losing focus and points because of this , it gets frustrating....

i guess it would take a lot more concentration and keeping one's cool when faced with a opponent like this.
