Equipment guide ex-competitive player

Equipment

Hi Coach,

I'm an ex-competitive player who has returned onto the table tennis scene after 5+ years of absence.

I'm looking for advice on a custom bat to play at my university (recreational & competitive).

For the little research that I've done, I've come up with:

Blade: Butterly Primorac Carbon

Forehand rubber: Tenergy 05 (2.1 mm)

Backhand rubber: Mark V (2 mm)

Would these match up well?

As for how I play, I'm an offensive player. I always seek opportunities to make the first aggressive stroke. For my forehand, I like to smash the ball and can generate a lot of topspin even on premade entry level bats (provided by the uni). As for my backhand, I prefer not to put a lot of spin on it, I like hitting it flat.

In conclusion, would the custom bat above be right for this play style? If you can suggest other options that would also be great.

Regards, Danny

Hi Danny,

There is a lot of difference between the Tenergy and Mark V.  If there is that much difference between your two sides then I think this would be a good combination.

Tone is in Your Fingers

There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!

*Update*

I have decided to switch my equipment, what I have in mind is:

Blade: XIOM Hayabusa ZXi

Forehand rubber: Tenergy 05

Backhand rubber: Vega Pro

Coach, do you think this setup is overkill?

Thanks in advance.

That is a more balanced choice.  It will depend on your level as to whether this is too fast or not for you.
