Hi Alois,

I was wondering how does Ma Long play the topspin off a backspin ball with so much speed and spin on it. I can make a spinny topspin but it's quite slow, and if I try to make it faster the ball goes into the net or if it's in there isn't really much spin on the ball. Is that speed and spin coming from his rubber or his technique? If it's not from the rubber, how can I make such a fast spinny topspin.

Hi Nasko,

He plays the ball so well because he is able to move his arm so fast.  This is helped with the use of his whole body working together to get the bat to move through quickly.

This starts with good technique of the stroke and then builds up with using other parts of the body to help him.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.

Should I close my bat angle a little bit if I want to hit the ball faster?

Yes you can close it a little.  Just get the feel for the type of ball you have and the see what works for you.
