I struggle to read my opponent's spin and my flick always ends up in the net, any tips how can I read my opponent's spin in serves?

If I cannot see the serve or my opponent is blocking the serve with their body or hand can I complain?

Hi Clement,

The main thing is to watch the ball as carefully as you can.  If the Flik is going into the net all the time, think about pushing the return. It may have heavy backspin.

If you can't see the contact of the serve you have the right to bring it to the attention of the umpire.  It is still then the umpire's call as to whether the serve is legal or not.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
