One question,

Is it okay to have the finish position for the forehand sort of across your body?

Hi Alex,

Without seeing the stroke it is not easy to comment but in general it is not a good idea to have the finish position of the forehand across your body. Take a look at our lesson on the forehand counterhit and note the finish position. You will see that it is not across the body. Using this basic finish position it is easy to extend the stroke into a forehand topspin which can be used against topspin or backspin with a slight variation.

A good idea is to watch as much high quality Table Tennis as you can and picture yourself playing the same strokes. Specifically with your question, watch people playing the forehand topspin.

The Finish Position

There are 3 basic areas to focus on when learning a stroke: 1) The position of your feet. 2) The starting position of your bat. 3) The finishing position of your bat. Of all these 3 elements the finish position is the most critical. Watch this video to find out why.
