Hey coaches, i use the hurricane 3 neo on my forehand and don't seem to have a good brushing contact when playing a topspin. Hence, i put many balls long.  Do you need come more forward with the stroke and really brush the ball to dip it onto the table?

Hi Jack,

Perhaps the rubber is lifting the all too much.  You could try to angle the bat down a little and brush more over the top of the ball.  This will keep the ball going forward and dipping onto the court.

With chinese rubbers, i have to close the angle of the bat and come forward with a bigger and faster stroke right?

Also i've seen the top chinese players have a rather flat contact when making a topspin. What do you think about this?

With a harder sponge and grippy top you can come over the ball a bit more.

The Chinese are still spinning the ball and brushing it on contact.  It may look like a flat contact but they are really ripping the contact.

Thanks coach. And i have one more question,i can't get the timing of the backhand topspin against backspin right. Seems that my backswing's too slow.

You could try listening to the ball. The timing will come.  Also focus on  the hitting spot you want for the backhand.  That is where it is in relation to your body.  Then wait till the ball is in that exact spot and make your swing.

Hey Alois, i tried closing the bat a little more and coming forward faster but it feels awkward and im not able to loop consistently.

Is it because there is little dwell time with a hard chinese rubber and stiff/hard blade combination or my technique?

It could be.  It may take time to get the feel of it.  You can always just use your old technique if brushing over the ball doesn't feel right.  It will still work.

Hey Alois, i found this useful video about the chinese forehand loop. It says to brush the ball with a 80-90degree angle of the bat. What do you think about this?

I think it is a good practice for good control, it makes it harder to miss the ball.

Yeah i've missed quite a lot of topspins whilst trying to hit the ball with a closed angle..

From this video, it seems that Ma Long is getting a rather open contact on the ball but is getting a good arc over to the table. Maybe im not brushing the ball enough?

Yes you still need to brush the ball on contact to generate the spin and dip on the ball.
