Free hand position

Strokes

I've recently joined a table tennis club in my area, and a highly skilled player told me that I should keep my free hand higher to maintain balance with my stroking arm. He used an analogy of carrying a large beach ball with both arms next to my stomach, and rotating my hips. Observing other highly skilled players, there seems to be tremendous variation in their free hand position. What's your advice? Love the website and thanks so much,

Hi Dan,

Your free hand needs to balance you.  This can vary a lot as you have seen with different players.  I think the main thing is that it is not just hanging down by your side.  Having your free arm up also helps you to use the whole of your non playing side.

Glad you are enjoying the website.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
