Getting rid of sidespin

Strokes

Hello PingSkills Team,

how are you? :)

Anyway, I want to tell you that I have made a great use of your Forehand Topspin off backspin video.  Thank to you,I have managed to fight on par with one of the best choppers I have ever clashed with.

Although I lost,I got to the point where he nearly could not perform two low chops in a row.
He admitted he is not able to keep defending against me once I do the first loop succesfully.
I am proud to say that I was able to lift his heavy chops even when off position.

Though, I noticed that there is still some sidespin on my loops.  I can do a sidespin loop consistently even off a backspin, but I would like to be able to play a straight loop too.  I tried, but when I tilted my bat correctly,I started missing the ball a lot or overshooting the table.
So I would want to ask: what are other aspects that are different for sidespin loop and straight loop except the tilt of the bat?

Thanks
DK

Hi DK,

Well done.  Great to hear another positive story from you.

To get straight topspin you need to focus on the wrist angle.  Turn your wrist back more if you are still getting sidespin.  This is the critical factor.  Then you may want to change the timing and hit the ball a little later as well.  This may help to get the bat at a better angle to generate straight topspin.

Thank you :)
I seem to enjoy playing an inverted chopper :)
He was almost unable to do two chops in a row :D

I know the wrist angle is the main.
I am just confused as I start missing the ball or the table a lot without the sidespin-angle.
Also: how can I 100% exactly tell that it is pure topspin?
Many players are saying me that there is no topspin and only sidespin on my strokes despite them being slow and curve-less.

The flight of the ball and the way it bounces after it hits the table.  A put topspin will bounce straight on.

Ask a training partner to "block" your topspin by just putting his bat 100% vertical and 100% parallel to the table endline. From the trajectory of the ball that will come out of his bat you will be able to judge the quantity of top and side spin.

The same amount of topspin can be judged "weak" by a good blocker and "unmanageable" by a weak one, so don't assume you have a problem just because of one feedback of this kind.

Hello PingSkills Team,

I also have mostly sidespin on my forehand loops and tried changing my wrist angle back as you suggested. The ball trajectory now has less sidespin but the ball is now going more towards the right side of the table. Is this a timing issue where I should be hitting earlier or some other adjustment?

Thanks for your valuable advice!
