Can you illustrate the starting position, ending position, stroke style, contact point, ideal types of serve or returns to play a backhand banana flick (Fan Zhendong's backhand flick) from various positions like from the inside of the board, quite or far away from the table?
Hi Debayan,
Take look at the tutorial on the Backhand Sidespin Flick. This will show you the mechanics of the stroke.
You can use this against a short serve with various spins, even backspin. If the ball goes longer off the table then you can use the Backhand Topspin Off Backspin stroke.

On a somewhat related note, what do you think makes Ma Long's banana flick so ineffective compared to the other top Chinese?

I think it is just that the rest of his game is strong so that it sets him up for the next ball well.
