Hi Luis,

Ma Lin's serve is great isn't it.  He does this serve by generating a lot of backspin on the ball without too much forward momentum.  To generate more backspin you need to brush the ball right at the base of the ball and brush it really fast.  Use yuor wrist to do this. Your wrist is the fastest moving part of your swing so use it to advantage.

Take  alook at our Serving Secrets Revealed DVD.  This will also help you.

To do the ghost serve (where it bounces backwards after it lands on the other side) you also have to brush upwards on the front of the ball...or it is at least easier to get that kind of backspin if you do this.  Your forehand side of the bat will face towards you as you brush the ball.  Hope that helps.

Did anybody see Ma Lin use it in a tournament? I have not.

I suspect it's like one of those Harlem Globetrotter style moves which is used to impress people but is not very practical in actual competition.  World class opponents would be able to flick those without too much trouble

I think this kind of serve is really good for the that can't look clearly on the spin and also for them that the response is low especially if the ball go back to your side so that they can't return that serve but it'll useless if you do this with the advance player because they know what should they do with that heavy backspin ball
