Hello Coach

I have played since I was a child, but never had a lesson and just casually with very average bats. Now my daughter is learning with a club and I want to play better and I'm looking for a reasonable bat. After reading a lot of information, I'm confused about whether to get a pre made or something better, rather than switching bats after a year or so.

I would like to be a good club player who can do competitions.

What would you recommend?

Also, could you recommend any blades, rubbers that should serve buy purpose?

Best regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

The Table Tennis racket market is deliberately confusing.  I think there are way too many choices out there and most of them are the same equipment branded differently.  In a way that is reassuring.

I would go for a custom made racket if you are thinking seriously about playing for a longer time. It sounds like you are.

The first thing I would do is ask someone at the club if they have equipment.  You may be able to even try out a few players rackets at the club so that you get the feeling of what might feel good for you.  The thing to look for is a slower blade (wood).  I would go for an Allround rated wood.  Most of them have speed ratings on them.  Take a look at the manufacturers ratings and compare them only within manufacturers.  Go for something at the slower end, this is really important.  A lot of players go for something too fast and then find it difficult to control the ball and learn good technique.  You can't go too far wrong if you follow this. They will all feel pretty good if you have been using a premade racket previously.

For rubbers I would recommend something like Mark V or Sriver rubber.  Again, this is at the slower end of the scale but you can upgrade later if the need arises.

We have the PingSkills Touch Table Tennis Bats.  I would recommend you get it with the Mark V if you go down that path.

Hope this helps the confusion a little.
