Handling spin: meeting spin with spin?

Strokes

Coach,

I am faced with a lot of slow paced high spin play in my league. I am wondering how I can better control my returns of high spin shots. Too often my return shots take an unexpected path. Is the secret to meet spin with spin or is it something else?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

It is best to just use the angle of your bat to get the spin back.  If you try to use spin to get the spin back it becomes too risky.

So if the spin is taking the ball to the right, then you should angle your bat to the left and vice versa.

Give it a try.  Experience is the best cure of being able to return spin.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
