Strokes
I am using a hobby bat ( stiga kontra) and I encounter difficulty in returning backspin. Do I need to purchase a good quality blade and rubber so that I may be able to hit the ball by brushing stroke? I am new player and I practice with the aid of a robopong machine. Can you suggest how to best utilize this machine to improve my game?
thanks
Florencio
Hi Florencia,
It may be the bat that is not allowing you to lift the ball. If the rubber isn't a good enough quality it will not allow you to grip the ball and lift it over the net.
You don't need a very high quality rubber but something that will help. If you are up for it we recommend Yasaka Mark V rubber as you first rubber.
The best way to practice this is to set the robot to backspin and practice making a topspin off that ball consistently. Make sure the ball from the robot is only bouncing once on your side of the table to allow you to topspin.
Once you've mastered the start and finish position of the forehand topspin, you can start to focus on finer details. In this video we talk about the position of your legs, weight transfer, varying the finish position, incorporating footwork, the use of your wrist, and the angle of your bat for the stroke.
