It is really tough to counter a side spin serve, Exactly the serve which Jeff has shown in the DVD. The ball always goes off the table when that is served. So can you please help me sort out this problem. Pingskills is helping me in correcting my mistakes and learn many new interesting things which help me in my play! Thank to you!
Hi Ganesh,
It sounds like you are half way to solving the problem yourself. You have already noticed that the ball always goes off the table. Now you need to angle your bat to counter the sidespin and direct the ball back onto the table.
Have a look at James' question on combating side spin serves and see if you can follow the advice I gave in that answer about how to practice returning this type of serve.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
