How to deal with a high spinblock

Strokes

Hi Alois,

one more from my infinite list of difficulties: When I play a fast forhand topspin it sometimes is blocked quite high (mid of the tabble, ca. 30cm above netheight) with some backspin. When I smash it or play another topspin the ball often goes into the net. Do you have any idea how to deal with such balls?

Thanks

Manfred

Hi Manfred,

This can be an awkward ball.  The main thing is to make sure you don’t try to hit the ball too hard unless you are in good position.  So first think about making sure you are in a good position to make the shot.  Then think about lifting the ball little still because of the backspin on the ball, play with a bit of topspin.

Yeah, it is an awkward ball. I often see people going for a 'backspin smash' instead of topspin in this situation. I think it is not right.
