Hi there coach, I just wanted to know what is a mental strength, and what are some ways I can do to develop my mental strength? I was told that this is one of the most important factor in order to become a great table tennis player. So how would I be able to increase my mental strength? can you please give me some specific steps or exercises? thank you so much :)

Hi Wayne,

Mental strength is the ability to play your best Table Tennis in all circumstances.  This is almost impossible but what we aim for is to get closer to that.

This is done by controlling your emotional levels.  This is a long long process that takes time to develop.  I think at this stage take a look through the many Ask the Coach questions we have on the site on this topic.  From this you will start to gain some good ideas.

You can try some deep breaths when you start to feel nervous or too lethargic during a game.  You can also take some time to gather yourself.  This can be done during your towel breaks every 6 points.  There are lots of tools you can use but firstly understand what is happening to yourself when you get nervous.  Start to focus on the feelings that you get when this is happening.
