Hi Errol,

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

Tracking the ball is something that you need to practice in training and in a match situation.

One simple way is to draw something on the ball that will attract you to watching the ball.  You can colour the ball or part of it which will help you to see it spinning and moving through the air as well.

I find that players often forget to practice this part of the game.  It is like any other skill, you need to practice it regularly.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.

Alternatively, you may draw an "X" on one side of the ball and maybe an "O" on the other side. Make it more interesting? Is this a better idea?

I found this technique really helpful during training and my tracking has improved. It doesn't really matter what you draw on the ball, either.

Unfortunately during a game, with no such visual cue, I still find myself stopping tracking at about the point the ball passes the end line on my side as I begin to anticipate watching my brilliant shot fly past my opponent :) ...
